- The former Old Trafford centre-back urges the club's fans to recreate the Anfield cauldron in their Europa League last-32 second-leg meeting with bitter rivals Liverpool
Gary Pallister has called for a Manchester United player to make himself a hero in their Europa League showdown with Liverpool on Thursday.
United trail 2-0 after a first-leg defeat at Anfield in which the hosts swept aside Louis van Gaal's men with goals from Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino capping the win.
But Pallister thinks that the time is right for one of United's stars to "step up to the plate" at Old Trafford after an inconsistent season so far.
"It is an opportunity for one or more to step up to the plate and become a United hero, These players know what is required of them every time they pull on a United jersey and this is one time when they have to deliver.
"It is nights like this that can provide the momentum to go on and finish the season strongly. There has been lots of disappointments this season but we can still win two cups and finish in the top four, so all is not lost."
Pallister has also urged United fans to recreate the atmosphere at Anfield in the first leg and make Old Trafford feel like a cauldron.
He added: "We need an atmosphere similar to what we experienced at Anfield last week. Their fans were terrific and got behind their team and I'm sure that made a huge difference.
"Old Trafford has to be as intimidating as possible, not just from the kick-off, but from the moment the teams come out for the warm-up. It has to be a cauldron and the Liverpool players need to know that they will have an uncomfortable night from start to finish.
"The fans need to make lots of noise, sing their songs and back the players even if there is a setback or two. It's a European night and even though Liverpool is just a few miles along the M62 our fans have got to make them feel a long way from home."
